How to help
To make a donation that would help pay for the Ski Band’s uniforms, drop off checks payable to the Steamboat Springs High School Band Uniform Fund at the school, 45 Maple St., or checks can be mailed to the school in care of Jim Knapp. For more information, call Knapp at 970-871-3563.
Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs High School band director Jim Knapp is pleased with the band’s rapid growth, but it has created a predicament this year.
The band has grown to nearly 70 students — an increase of 50 in the past four years. Additional students will require Knapp to order new uniforms for the band to wear during the Winter Carnival. The Ski Band will perform in the parade Feb. 6.
Knapp’s band students don skis, matching jackets and cowboys hats and lead the procession down Lincoln Avenue for the annual mid-winter event, in its 98th year.
Three years ago, the Ski Band was outfitted with new uniforms with red ski jackets from BAP and black cowboy hats from F. M. Light & Sons.
To outfit the entire band, Knapp has ordered an additional 25 uniforms at a cost of nearly $3,500. He said two fundraisers have raised $2,000, but they still need to make up the difference to buy the uniforms.
“We’ve been supporting the parade for over 75 years,” Knapp said. “It’s a real Steamboat tradition. It would be really helpful to fund the uniforms without having to worry about paying for them during these economic times.”
The band has another fundraiser to help pay for the new uniforms. Knapp said the second annual Jazz Guest Artist Concert on Feb. 1 would feature the high school band, Steamboat Swings and guest artist Dr. Nathaniel Wickham, trombone professor at the University of Northern Colorado.
He said all proceeds would be dedicated to pay for the uniforms and to the band’s instrument fund. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and will be sold by band members and at Space Station gas station.
Knapp said any donations or proceeds from the concert that exceed what the band needs for the uniforms will be dedicated to the instrument fund. The fund allows the band to replace outdated or broken instruments for students to use.
