Steamboat Springs Soroco High School wrestling coach Jay Whaley said Josh Baker always seems to find ways to win close matches.
The 140-pound sophomore always seems to find ways to keep improving, too. A week after what Whaley then called the best tournament of Baker’s career, a second-place finish at Eagle Valley, he went out and one-upped himself, winning a tournament for the first time. Baker led the way for Soroco at a Saturday tournament in Rangely.
“He’s wrestling better every week. He learns where he makes mistakes and he doesn’t make them again,” Whaley said.
Baker won in the championship round by coming back from a third-period deficit. He pulled a reverse and won 6-5.
Soroco’s Tristan Palyo, at 145 pounds, narrowly missed joining Baker on top of the podium. He lost a close match in the semifinals, then won in the consolation match to finish third.
“He had a really good day,” Whaley said.
Colton Martindale at 103 pounds missed placing by one match.
“The rest of the boys just need to improve right now,” Whaley said. “They’re so green. They got out-experienced.”
