Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School girls basketball team found itself in an unexpected fight Saturday as it played at North Park. After one quarter, the Tigers, who considered themselves heavy favorites, were wrapped up in an 8-8 tie.
Wow, did that change quickly. Hayden scored the next 42 points in the game, blasting North Park with an intense press defense and holding the team scoreless for two full quarters en route to a 64-19 victory.
“We had a little trouble getting the motor started at first,” Hayden coach Eric Hamilton said. “Then we got after them pretty good on the defensive end.”
Aubree Haskins led Hayden with 12 points, and Erin Koehler had 11. Hamilton said senior Sierra Ehlers was one of several players to step up off the bench and help keep the Wildcats down.
“We played a lot of girls and kept fresh legs in there the whole time,” Hamilton said.
Nine Hayden players ended up with four points or more, helping lift Hayden to its second lopsided win in as many days after beating West Grand, 64-15, on Friday.
“I was really happy with the weekend,” Hamilton said. “It’s just going to get tougher from here on out, but we were happy with these performances.”
