Hayden boys basketball cruise behind Valdez for win

— Whatever has gotten into Hayden boys basketball player Jorge Valdez should be bottled up and distributed.

The sophomore put together his second consecutive huge game in helping Hayden beat West Grand, 67-44.

After putting up a 31 point, 21 rebound game Tuesday against Vail Christian, Valdez scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Friday.

“We’re getting through the season now, and I’m not as nervous now,” Valdez said. “I’m being more aggressive down low.”

That was the case Friday as Hayden (5-1) opened up a 34-24 lead at halftime and used a huge run in the third to decide the game.

The Mustangs cut the Tigers lead to 34-26 early in the third quarter, before Hayden went on a 18-2 run to make the score 52-28 with 1 minute, 21 seconds left in the quarter.

In addition to Valdez, Graig Medvesk led all scorers with 22 points. Ben Williams chipped in 13.

“We’re where we want to be,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “I’m pleased with that.”

Hayden next plays at 4 p.m. today at North Park.
