Whether or not the Hayden boys are the team to beat in the Western Slope League is up for debate, Tigers basketball coach Mike Luppes said. Hayden will try to improve to 3-0 in league play during an 8:30 p.m. game today against West Grand, one of the other teams Luppes said is in the top tier of the league.
If the Tigers, 5-1, are to establish themselves as one of the league favorites with a win, they’ll need to control Mustangs junior Travis Gore, who’s averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game.
“They also have a bunch of talented young kids,” Luppes said. “They’re working on their consistency and putting things together, but do a lot of really good things.”
Hayden may need some consistency of its own to win. Despite earning an 80-70 victory, the Tigers couldn’t put away a pesky Vail Mountain squad Tuesday. If his team is to assert itself as one of the league’s best, Luppes said it will need to cut down on the lapses in tenacity and judgment that have allowed games to remain close.
