Steamboat Springs Editor’s note: Sonja Macys’ letter to the editor was received by the Steamboat Pilot & Today before it contacted her for the story published today.
I am writing to express my grave disappointment in the Steamboat Pilot & Today for your failure to report on the national tragedy that occurred Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. It is hard not to take the omission as an insult to those who were slain, and those who are still fighting for their lives.
U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords and Ron Barber are friends of mine. So was Gabe Zimmerman. I worked with Gabby on environmental issues during her service as a state senator in Arizona and later during her first term as the congresswoman representing Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.
Like Gabby and so many people, we have remained friends, even though I no longer live in Arizona. That is just how she is. What you hear about her on the radio and on television is true. She is an outstanding individual, a person of fine character and integrity. Her good, solid, honest values and sense of patriotic duty have helped her serve Arizona’s 8th Congressional District and the people of this nation selflessly and admirably.
The attack on Gabby, her staff, and the innocent people who chose to take part in our participatory democracy is unforgivable. As the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives noted, “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve.”
I am baffled by the lack of coverage of this senseless tragedy in our local newspaper. The kind people of Steamboat Springs, those who are aware of what happened, are keeping the victims in our thoughts and prayers, and wishing comfort for the families of those who have fallen. I hope the Steamboat Pilot & Today will join us. Please help us make our community aware of this tragedy. We may learn lessons from it that can move us towards a more peaceful community and society.
