Fast start lifts Glenwood girls past Steamboat basketball team

2010-11 Sailors girls basketball schedule

— Jumping out to a 12-1 lead and maintaining a modest advantage the rest of the way, Glenwood’s girls improved to 10-0 with a 52-40 win against visiting Steamboat on Friday.

Kenzie Kuhn led the unbeaten Demons with 19 points. Lexie Warkentin scored 13, Connor Adams nine and Kenzie Nelson-Buehler seven in the Western Slope League opener for both teams.

“We knew, coming out after Christmas break, that we were going to be sluggish,” Glenwood coach Bryan Derby said. “We knew that, so we just thought that, if we could hang in there and stop their shooters, we’d be just fine.”

That approach did the trick. The Demons ended the first quarter with a 12-4 lead and were up, 25-17, at halftime.

“We came out and did what we needed to do,” Nelson-Buehler said. “We had our ups and downs, but we got the win, which is a good thing.”

Hannah Moore led the Sailors (4-6) with 21 points. The senior struck for 11 of those points in the fourth quarter. Katie Lettunich and Alex Feeley finished with five points apiece.

“It wasn’t rust. It was just a slow start,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “Getting down 12-1, then 12-4 after the end of the first quarter. That’s what really hurt us. We played with them the rest of the game.”

Next up for Ameen and the Sailors is a non-league visit from Mead at 5:30 p.m. today. Glenwood will face Moffat County at 2 p.m. today in Craig.
