Steamboat Springs What a way to begin the post-holiday season.
The Steamboat Springs High School girls and boys basketball teams open 2011 and the Western Slope League schedule today at Glenwood Springs. The girls, 4-5, play at 6 p.m. with the boys, 5-5, at 7:30 p.m.
The girls also play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Mead.
In addition to Steamboat, each Glenwood squad is expected to be in the mix for a league championship, making the first game back from the holiday break all the more intriguing.
“It’s one of those games we look forward to for a long time,” boys coach Luke DeWolfe said. “You see it early on the schedule and know it should be a good one.”
For the boys, the key will be trying to stop reigning player of the year Kevin Flohr. Flohr comes into the game averaging 25.5 points per game.
“He’s just a phenomenal shooter,” DeWolfe said. “He can hit from anywhere on the court at any time.”
Girls coach John Ameen sounded confident in his team’s familiarity with Glenwood.
Ameen said his team had good workouts throughout the holiday break, and he is confident his team’s tough pre-holiday schedule will benefit the Sailors as league play gets under way.
The Demons come in at 8-0 but have played only one team with a winning record.
“You jump into playing one of the best teams in the league,” Ameen said. “We’ll do a few things. It’s really no different than any other game, but it’s against a really quality opponent.”
