Steamboat Springs — The kozo paper that local artist Laura Wait layers onto panels with hot wax is strong, but transparent. It’s fibrous and detailed, yet delicately placed into a collage-like arrangement in which written characters refer to a word, but the meaning is indiscernible.
“It’s not writing,” Wait said Wednesday just before hanging her new art show at K. Saari Gallery. “It’s literary, but it’s not about word meaning; it’s about the shape.
“I want the language to be abstract.”
Wait’s new show, “Calligraphitti,” opens today during First Friday Artwalk from 5 to 8 p.m. at K. Saari Gallery.
Several downtown galleries and venues will feature artists’ work, refreshments and an amiable social atmosphere during the monthly event.
Wait’s show comprises about 15 encaustic works that she created in 2010. The work has expanded since her last series and offers larger, wilder brush strokes of sumi ink on the kozo paper. The panels are also larger, and vibrant blues and reds accent the textured work.
“This year had a lot of energy, even violence,” Wait said. “There was a lot of stress last year.”
