Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School boys basketball team locked up a share of the league title and the No. 1 overall seed in the district tournament on Friday by dispatching Vail Mountain, 69-45.
The Tigers will enter next weekend’s district tournament in Hayden as the top overall seed. Hayden won’t know what team it plays until Tuesday.
“If you asked us at the beginning of the year, we’d take 16-3 and the No. 1 seed in the district tournament,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “We’d be pretty happy to take that.”
Hayden jumped out to a 23-8 lead after one quarter and led 32-21 at halftime. Playing a full bench, the Tigers extended their lead to 49-31 after three quarters.
Ben Williams led the Tigers with 18 points, six rebounds, six steals, six assists and two blocks.
Jorge Valdez and Mark Doolin each chipped in 13 points.
Now, Hayden waits to see the results of Tuesday’s preliminary tournament games to see what team they play.
“We’ll go from there,” Luppes said. “We have our work cut out for us. A lot of those teams have been knocking each other off.”
