— The Hayden High School girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a dismal start Thursday, and fell, 50-42, to Little Snake River, Wyo.

The Tigers fell behind by as many as 18 points in the first half before making a game of it in the second half.

Hayden’s struggles in the game can be directly linked to the teams’ rebounding and turnovers. The Rattlers out-rebounded Hayden, 42-31, and held a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

“If we clean that up and rebound like we’re capable of and cut down our turnovers, I think we can play or beat anybody,” Hayden coach Eric Hamilton said. “It’s tough to do when you’re turning the ball over a lot.”

The Rattlers ran out to a 29-16 halftime lead and led, 35-18, with 5 minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter when the Tigers started to find something.

Led by senior Kyra Rolando — who had 10 of her game-high 20 points in the third — the Tigers finished the quarter on a 17-6 run to cut the Rattlers lead to 41-35.

Hayden’s Delanie VeDepo hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth to cut the lead to 41-38, but the Tigers followed with empty possession after empty possession and never would draw any closer.

“We just need to come out more focused,” VeDepo said. “We have to play four quarters of basketball instead of the last two.”

Hayden didn’t get much outside of Rolando, who also finished with six rebounds and four steals.

Brette Frentress and Erin Koehler each added six points.

Hayden is now off until the district tournament begins. If Rangely beats Paonia on Saturday, Hayden will play West Grand at home Tuesday. If Paonia wins, Hayden will get into the district playoffs without having to play a preliminary tournament game.

Either way, the Tigers fate will be determined by which Hayden team shows up — the one in the first half that looked outmatched or the one in the second half that was dominant.

“We’re getting there,” Hamilton said. “I’m really happy with that second half. This game will really prepare us for districts. We’re not going to hang our heads on this one. We showed we could come back and hang with a team that good.”
