Search and Rescue, Ski Patrol busy in Fish Creek drainage

Steamboat Springs — Routt County Search and Rescue and Steamboat Ski Area’s Ski Patrol were kept busy Saturday and Sunday evenings with two similar missions in the Fish Creek drainage.
On Saturday, a 35-year-old Illinois man injured his leg while skiing out of bounds in an area called Endless Gully. Ski patrollers reached the man and helped him ski down to the lower bridge at Fish Creek Falls, where a Search and Rescue team took him to the parking lot via snowmobile.
Search and Rescue incident commander Darrel Levingston said the man refused an ambulance. It is thought that he suffered a bad bruise. The mission ended at about 7:30 p.m. The original page for help was at about 4:30 p.m.
On Sunday, a 52-year-old man called for help from the same Endless Gully area out of bounds from Steamboat Ski Area. Ski patrollers initially had cell phone contact with the man. They found him, put him in a toboggan and took him down to the Fish Creek Falls trail, where a Search and Rescue team met the group and took the man to a waiting ambulance in the Fish Creek Falls parking lot at about 10:30 p.m.
Levingston said the man’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
