Steamboat Springs Soroco wrestlers Dillon Koler at 119 pounds, Josh Baker at 140 and Tristan Palyo at 145 all qualified on Saturday in Palisade for the state wrestling tournament in Denver.
Palyo, a junior, stood out from the bunch, narrowly missing winning his weight bracket. He fell, 6-3, in the finals.
“Tristan’s tough,” Soroco coach Jay Whaley said. “I knew he was tough, and I knew he would be fine. He does a really good job.”
Baker was third at 140 pounds, and Koler was fourth at 119.
Soroco’s Lauryn Bruggink finished fifth at 103 pounds, missing state for the first time in her high school career. The junior lost in the championship quarterfinals and then fell one point short in a bid to reach the consolation finals, a win that would have guaranteed her a return trip to state.
Colton Martindale was sixth at 112 pounds, and Jaden Baker was sixth at 152.
“Every person on the team, they wrestled all six minutes of every match,” Whaley said. “It didn’t matter if they were outgunned by a stud or not. I was proud of them.”
