— After the team claimed a tight must-win game Friday night, the playoff hopes for the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team took a blow Saturday as the squad dropped a game to Delta.

The Panthers beat Steamboat 51-45 to sweep the season series with the Sailors.

“To their credit, they played hard and aggressive,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We had our chances but weren’t able to capitalize.”

Steamboat, 11-10, will close out its season Friday at Moffat County. Had the Sailors been able to avoid an early second-half swoon Saturday, that looming game might have carried a lot more weight.

As it is, the Sailors are long shots to be included in the field of 32 that will make up the Class 4A state playoffs.

Steamboat trailed by three points Saturday at halftime, but the game slipped away as the squad didn’t score for the first half of the third quarter.

Delta took advantage, and the lead swelled to 13 points.

“They converted on some turnovers and hit a few shots,” Ameen said. “They just capitalized on a lot more things in a more immediate time span.”

Steamboat, led by senior Hannah Moore’s 19 points, clawed back into the game in what time remained, but never managed to fully make up the deficit.
