Steamboat Springs — The Soroco High School boys basketball team hung with Meeker through most of the first half of Saturday’s game, trailing just 21-18 with 2 minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Cowboys used the next 10 minutes to put the Rams away, however, sending Soroco to a 70-37 defeat. Meeker closed that first half on an 11-0 run and then outscored Soroco, 21-6, in the third quarter.
“We executed the best we’ve executed all year for 10 solid minutes,” Rams coach Andy Johnson said about the first half. “We were moving. We were sharing the ball. We were getting some good looks inside.”
Senior Leif Carlson led the team with 11 points, and freshman Matthew Regan scored 9, seven from the free-throw line. None of it was enough to keep the team in the ballgame in the second half.
“We missed a huge opportunity. They didn’t come out intense right away in the second half,” Johnson said. “We weren’t intense either, but they found theirs before we found ours.”
Soroco returns to action Friday at home against De Beque.
“If we come out and play well, good things will happen,” Johnson said.
