Steamboat Springs It was Senior Night for the Hayden boys basketball team Friday, and senior Graig Medvesk made his special.
Although his Tigers turned to the bench often, Medvesk was in long enough to score a game-high 21 points, and that was more than enough to push Hayden’s star over 1,000 career points as the Tigers rolled over Soroco, 65-46.
“He’s just boosted it up to another level the last two or three weeks,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “He’s in a really good zone and we hope to keep him there a while longer.”
Medvesk’s milestone came when he sank a 3-point shot with 2 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the second quarter. It, like many of the hundreds of baskets that came before, had his trademark look of ease, swishing through the basket perfectly.
Fellow senior Ben Williams also came up big Friday, scoring 17.
Soroco, 3-10, also got some solid play, but only after falling into an enormous first-half hole. The team trailed 27-4 early in the second quarter, but soon began to establish scoring threats.
Sophomore Nic Paxton banked in a 3-point shot to start to cut into the deficit. He got plenty of help as the game wore on. Senior Leif Carlson scored 12 points and freshman Matthew Regan hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12.
Both teams return to action today, with Hayden, 15-1, playing at 4 p.m. at West Grand with a chance to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the district tournament.
Soroco plays at 4 p.m. in Meeker.
