Steamboat Springs The Soroco High School girls had hoped for a measure of revenge Friday night, the Rams figuring four solid quarters against Hayden would give the team a victory when last month two solid quarters gave them a fat half-time lead.
Soroco didn’t play any solid quarters, however, and could do little to hang with a Tigers team playing on Senior Night intent on showing it remained the team to beat in Class 2A basketball in Routt County.
Hayden handled Soroco, 76-41.
“We all wanted to come out and make a statement,” Hayden senior Morgan Bell said.
Hayden’s win virtually locks up the No. 2 seed in the district tournament assuming the Tigers (14-3) can handle one-win West Grand at 2:30 p.m. today in Kremmling.
Soroco (7-4), meanwhile, still can secure a home game for the first round of that tournament by winning at 2:30 p.m. today at Meeker.
Junior Madison George scored 15 points to lead the team, but the Rams couldn’t score easily.
“It wasn’t anything Hayden did tougher. We just all missed our shots — everybody,” George said. “We even kept missing inside. Once you start missing those easy shots, it hurts your confidence.”
Hayden proved to be as “on” as Soroco was “off.”
The Tigers led 19-9 after one quarter and 38-18 at half. Senior Kyra Rolando often led the team’s efficient and effective fast break down the court and finished with nine points. Bell got hot from the 3-point line and had 11.
Still, the trouble didn’t really start for Soroco until Hayden senior Erin Koehler went to work. She shot as well as she has all season, burying jumpers from 15 feet as well as driving down the baseline to lay in close ones. She finished with a game-best 16 points.
“I was impressed by that. For them to win the state tournament, she’s going to have to play like that,” Soroco coach David Bruner said about Koehler before turning his attention back to his team’s key game today.
“We’ll have to make some shots,” Bruner said. “We’re not going to beat anyone shooting like we did (Friday). We’ll have to play a lot better.”
