Steamboat Springs Sports talking heads sometimes suggest it’s good for a high-quality team to lose a game before the season-ending tournament, that a loss can allow the team to refocus.
Hayden High School boys basketball coach Mike Luppes said that wasn’t the plan, but it quickly became one after the squad was upset on Saturday, 53-52, at West Grand.
“We didn’t play bad, but we weren’t as sharp as we wanted to be,” Luppes said. “West Grand played well and shot the ball really well.”
Hayden, 16-2, clung to a 2-point lead late in the back-and-forth game, but the Mustangs scored with three seconds remaining and drew a foul. They sank the free throw to take the game-deciding 1-point lead.
Graig Medvesk had 30 points for Hayden, and Mark Doolin scored 14. Only three other Tigers scored, however, and none had more than four.
“We have a pretty good feeling we’ll see them again in districts,” Luppes said. “Hopefully, the outcome is different if we do.”
Hayden has a tough out-of-state test at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The team travels to play at Little Snake River High School, in Baggs, Wyo. The Rattlers are considered to have one of the top teams in their state.
