Steamboat Springs Throughout the rebuilding of Steamboat’s wrestling program, coach Shane Yeager never has been as excited for the regional wrestling meet as he is this year.
The Sailors will field six wrestlers for today and Saturday’s meet at Mesa State College in Grand Junction. The meet begins with weigh-ins at 10 a.m. today.
“This is the most excited I’ve been coaching,” said Yeager, who’s in his third year. “I’m taking six guys down there and none of them are an easy match.”
Steamboat is led by 140-pound sophomore Casey Williams, who has a good shot at advancing to state.
In addition to Williams, Nathan Parks at 112 pounds and Dane Koepfer at 130 pounds are strong contenders in their weight classifications.
Connor O’Brien at 152 pounds, Brandon Yeager at 160 and Cole Sittig at 215 also will compete for the Sailors.
“If you win of all the matches you’re supposed to win and steal one from someone else, you’ve got a shot,” Yeager said.
