Vail Steamboat Springs outscored Eagle Valley, 13-4, in the fourth quarter Tuesday to get out of Gypsum with a 41-28 win.
That was good for the Sailors and bad for the Devils in more ways than the obvious.
Steamboat coach John Ameen felt his team was in an offensive stupor.
“We didn’t come out very intense. We were in daze for most of the game,” he said. “They threw a box-and-one on Hannah (Moore), and we don’t face that much. But they’ve got to be able to make better adjustments on the fly. We made good-enough adjustments.”
And for Eagle Valley, those eight minutes were a part of a continuing pattern of fourth-quarter issues.
“We seemed to do all right finding our posts and filling in the lanes,” Eagle Valley coach Sam Bartlett said. “Then, in the fourth quarter, we kind of lost track of what we were doing. Our nerves got the best of us. The fourth quarter has been brutal to us.”
Eagle Valley played well for three quarters, taking a 19-18 lead in the third. Steamboat’s zone defense, however, took over the game in the fourth, turning away possession after possession from the Devils.
The Sailors also had a nice perimeter game going with Tara Spitellie (12 points), Moore (11) and Alex Feeley (6) all hitting 3s.
