Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team got off to a slow start Friday at Columbine but rebounded with two strong closing periods to skate away with a 4-0 road win.
The Sailors outshot the Rebels, 47-23, and got a perfect game in net from Erik Owen and Joey Haight to improve to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in the Foothills Conference.
After a scoreless first period, Steamboat scored late in the second on a short-handed goal from junior Lance Ostrom.
Linemate John Wharton added a tally just 40 seconds later to give the Sailors a 2-0 lead.
Senior defenseman Patrick Weston scored a power play goal early in the third, and Ostrom tallied his second of the night midway through the period to finish off the scoring.
“We got the two points,” Steamboat coach Jeff Ruff said about the win. “We started a little slow, but we got it done. We came down and got the points, and that’s what we needed to do.”
Steamboat plays at 6:10 p.m. today at Dakota Ridge.
