Steamboat Springs The Battle Mountain girls took an early 3-0 lead Friday against Steamboat. The Sailors took over from there, running away with a 53-30 win in Kelly Meek Gymnasium.
“We had a slow start defensively,” Huskies coach Andrew Schmid said. “They’re solid shooters, so give them credit. Offensively, however many points we had in the first half, it just wasn’t enough.”
Steamboat (9-9, 4-4) used a strong defense to create easy offense, taking a 14-3 lead after one quarter and a 27-9 lead at halftime.
Steamboat extended its lead to 40-15 after three quarters and led by as much as 44-17 early in the fourth before substitutions started to fly in.
“They finally started to settle down, and we went on a run,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We needed a good start and four quarters of good, intense basketball, and we got it.
Steamboat’s Hannah Moore led all scorers with 20 points. Katie Lettunich added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Kenia Olivas led the Huskies (1-17, 0-8) with 10 points and six rebounds.
Steamboat plays at 2 p.m. today at Eagle Valley.
