Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Ski Area has reopen lifts after they were closed Thursday morning because of high winds. Ski area officials reported sustained winds of 40 to 60 mph on Mount Werner, with gusts up to 70 mph.
The Christie Peak Express chairlift from the base of Mount Werner opened at about 10:15 a.m., and the gondola and other lifts opened shortly after.
The ski area picked up 7 inches of snow in the past 24 at midmountain and 6 inches at the summit. The midmountain base is now 26 inches, with a 25-inch base at the top of Storm Peak. The ski area is offering 98 trails served by 12 lifts.
The 5 a.m. temperature on Mount Werner was 10 degrees with northeast winds blowing 40 to 60 mph. Thursday’s forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a 30 percent chance of snow Thursday morning and a daytime high of 22 degrees. The skies will eventually become mostly sunny. Thursday night’s low will dip to minus 11 degrees.
The extended forecast shows sunny skies and temperatures in the 20s through Saturday, with gradual warming to the mid- and upper 30s on Christmas Day.
