Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team couldn’t overcome slow starts in both halves Saturday in the final game of the Flaming Gorge Classic, eventually falling, 57-26, to Cheyenne Central.
“We didn’t play well at all,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We just didn’t come out ready to play.”
The Sailors fell behind, 15-5, in the first quarter but were able to keep it within striking distance at halftime, trailing 30-18.
But Cheyenne Central opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to make it 38-18.
It was the final game for Steamboat (6-3) before the holiday break. Despite ending on a losing note, Ameen said he was happy with the development of his team.
The Sailors should get stronger after the break with the return of Eryn Rinck from injury.
“We’re happy to be where we are,” Ameen said. “But we have to keep going. We expect to compete with the upper echelon of the league.”
