The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team found more ways to lose rather than win Thursday in the opening game of the Flaming Gorge Classic in Green River, Wyo., falling 42-39 to Riverton.

The Sailors (3-5) turned the ball over 21 times and shot 53 percent from the free throw line. Steamboat hit just 14 of 26 free throws including missing the front end of five 1-and-1s.

“We could have negated a lot of those things if we would have made free throws,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said.

The game was back and forth the entire time, but Steamboat’s struggles at the free-throw line at the end of the game doomed the Sailors.

Jake Miller led Steamboat with 13 points, while Eric Trousil had 9 points.

“Our kids played hard and the effort is there,” DeWolfe said. “Some of the little things we do offensively continually haunt us.”

The team continues play at 8 a.m. Friday against Star Valley.
