Steamboat Springs It wasn’t the start or the finish the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team desired.
Steamboat started poorly Monday at Aspen and allowed a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to lose, 48-47.
Aspen’s Daniel Amador committed a foul on Steamboat’s Justin Ditter with 25 seconds left.
Ditter hit both free throws to give Steamboat a 47-45 lead. But Amador hit a 3 from the corner, and Kit Croop’s last-second heave caught the front of the rim, leaving Steamboat with a loss.
“For us, we didn’t show up ready to play,” said Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe, whose team again struggled with turnovers, this time committing 18. “We were flat the whole first half, especially defensively. We were just not ready to go.”
Steamboat trailed 16-9 after one quarter and 20-19 at the half. Aspen led by as many as six in the third quarter before Steamboat closed the gap to 42-41 going into the final quarter.
Jake Miller paced the Sailors with 14 points. Ditter added 10, and Carter Kounovsky had nine.
Steamboat next plays Thursday when the team heads to Green River, Wyo., for a three-day tournament.
“We’ll play some really good teams,” DeWolfe said. “It’s going to be another physical three days up there.”
