Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Ski Area is opening additional terrain Friday as well as adding Thunderhead Express to its list of operating chairlifts.
A ski area release Thursday afternoon says the resort will drop the ropes on some previously closed trails on Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak and Christie Peak. Those trails include Storm Peak South, Triangle 3, Sunset, Vagabond, Eagles’ Nest, Betwixt, Giggle Gulch and See Ya.
“The cold temperatures have allowed snowmaking crews to expand terrain and continue to prepare new skiing and riding opportunities each week,” Vice President of Mountain Operations Doug Allen said in the release.
The openings will bring the total skiable acres to 702 via 54 trails and eight lifts.
Cold temperatures have allowed snowmaking to take place almost 24 hours a day for much of this week. Some of those snowmaking efforts will begin to shift to the Priest Creek and Sunshine Bowl areas, according to the release.
Resort officials also are stressing that backcountry access is not available, and that anyone who crosses a rope into closed terrain is subject to a fine. Similarly, hiking up the ski area outside of existing open areas is not allowed.
“Do not violate closures on the ski area,” Ski Patrol Director John Kohnke said. “Remember, it’s going to be a long season, so make sure you make smart choices and are here to enjoy all of it.”
