Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team couldn’t manage much in the first quarter of a Saturday game against Basalt, but the Sailors improved to 2-0 by dominating the rest of the game.
Steamboat rolled Basalt, 52-24.
“In the second, third and fourth quarters, we played fast, hard and together,” coach John Ameen said. “It was a group effort. All 10 girls that suited up played well.”
Nikki Fry led the squad with 13 points, and Maggie Crouch scored 9, helping lift the squad out of a tight 5-3 first-quarter game.
Steamboat was up, 26-10, by the end of the second quarter and never looked back.
The team hopes to carry that momentum into the weekend’s Steamboat Shootout. The tournament starts for Steamboat at 8:15 p.m. Thursday against Windsor.
“We were playing a more up-tempo style with real pressure D this weekend and that’s what we want to see,” Ameen said. “We still have things to iron out, but we have a lot of good stuff to build on.”
