Steamboat Springs It was another big game for Steamboat’s Jake Miller and another win for his team. Miller scored 17 points to lead the Sailors by Basalt on Saturday, 47-32.
“We definitely relied on our big guys and they came through,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said.
Kit Croop had 8 points and Eric Trousil had 7 as Steamboat took a fat halftime lead and expanded upon it. The Sailors led, 22-11, after two quarters and got even better as the game went on.
“We had a slow start, but we definitely finished better,” DeWolfe said.
Steamboat won’t likely be able to afford slowness in any aspect of its game Monday when it travels to Niwot, considered one of the top teams in Class 4A. The Sailors had 26 turnovers Saturday and curbing those mistakes will be key.
“We just have to fix some mistakes we’re making right now and we’ll see,” DeWolfe said. “We can’t turn the ball over and we need to make better decisions offensively, play solid defense and not get dumb fouls. If we can do that, we can play with anyone.
“We’re happy to be 2-0, to have had a great start. Now we’ll see where we’re at.”
