Steamboat hockey stumbles against Fountain Valley

Joel Reichenberger

— John Wharton had a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough for the roadtripping Steamboat Springs High School hockey team, which fell, 6-3, on Friday night at Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley broke open a tie game by scoring three goals in the second period. It added one more in the third to ensure Steamboat wouldn’t be coming back in the battle.

Wharton actually lifted Steamboat back into the game once. The Sailors went down 2-0 early, but Wharton scored twice in 95 seconds to tie the score.

Fountain Valley struck back with a short handed goal, however, and took advantage of a heap of Steamboat penalties throughout the game.

The Sailors had 10 penalty minutes in the third period alone, and finished with 25.

Wharton final goal was shorthanded, but wasn’t enough to pull the game closer.

The Sailors, 1-1, play at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kent Denver.
