Steamboat girls hoops wins season opener
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team used a strong defensive performance and timely offense to run away with its season opening game Friday. The Sailors beat Roaring Fork, 45-36.
“Defensively, we played really well,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We forced them out of their game a little bit, forced a lot of turnovers and made them make a lot of mistakes.”
Steamboat couldn’t take advantage of that defense early, leading by only 1 point at halftime. It cracked the code in the second half, however, and built up a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Sydney Bauknecht and Nikki Fry helped lead the way. Each scored 13 points, Bauknecht with four 3-point shots. Fry and Jessie Wallace each grabbed five rebounds.
“In the second half we warmed up offensively, so that was good, but defensively we were consistent the whole game,” Ameen said. “We were flying everywhere, forcing a lot of turnovers.”
The squad returns to action Saturday against Basalt.
