2011-12 Tigers girls basketball schedule

— It wasn’t nearly as pretty, and the stats were not half as eye-popping. But the Hayden High School girls basketball team’s second game of the season might have said a lot more about the squad than the first game, however.

A day after beating Cedaredge, a rout fueled by 35-points from senior Erin Koehler, Hayden picked up its second win of the season, knocking off Palisade in the semifinal round of the Meeker tournament.

This one was no easy stroll. Hayden rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to win, 38-31.

“We were down and the girls just had to decide if they were going to be afraid or be confident,” Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. “They had to decide if they were going to believe in each other and believe in themselves, and they came out and outscored (Palisade) by 11 in the third quarter.”

That rally may be a good sign for the squads intestinal fortitude, but the mechanics of the rally offered a good sign, as well. Senior Aubree Haskins scored 12 points in the third quarter, her teammates repeatedly lobbing the ball over the defense as she set up in the paint.

She finished with 15 points while Koehler poured in 12.

“We just started clicking. Our wings and our guards were aware of Aubree being open and they got it into her,” Wilkie said. “We played phenominal defense. That was just wonderful.”

Hayden now plays at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against either Meeker or Grand Valley.
