— With turnovers, poor shooting and clunky execution, it looked like what it was: the first game of the season. The Soroco High School girls basketball team overcame all that Thursday night and opened the season, 1-0, knocking off North Park in Oak Creek, 33-23.

“It was ugly,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “It was ugly, but we won. It was like a Broncos game.”

If the Rams were the Broncos, Madison George was their Tim Tebow (though with a bit more consistency). The senior guard, in her fourth season as a starter, poured in a game-high 14 points, setting the pace in the first half with a very un-Tebow-esque nine points.

She got plenty of help along the way from Shelby Miles, who hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with seven points, and Lindsay Miles, who scored seven more. Jacey Schlegel added five.

Soroco opened with a full-court press and that helped rocket the team to an 8-0 lead. The squad couldn’t maintain that pressure; however, and the game closed back up.

Part of the reason for that was poor shooting that left the Rams connecting on 13 of 71 attempts.

“We need to work on getting in shape,” Shelby Miles said. “We were missing wide open layups, wide open.”

“We didn’t move around the ball enough,” Madison George added.

The mood wasn’t one of frustration, however. All of that’s a lot more fun to work on while sitting at 1-0.
