Sailors golf team wraps trip with loss, win

— There are good days on the course and bad days on the course when you’re as inexperienced as the Steamboat Springs High School golf team.

So after slogging its way through Monday’s round at Redlands Mesa, where the team shot a 259, Steamboat turned around Tuesday at Tiara Rado and tied for second place with a 235. The 235 was good for a first-place tie with Battle Mountain among Class 4A teams.

“We called (Monday) a bonus trip for the team,” coach Steve Dodson said. “I guess it was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”

After Monday’s showing, the team sat down and adjusted its mental game. Originally, the team’s focus had been on getting players to shoot in the 70s. That didn’t happen Monday. Sam Scheer led Steamboat with an 86. Erik Sobeck shot 87, Andrew Firestone shot 86, and Brandon Martin shot 93.

After the mental meeting, the team decided to break the game down to six segments of three holes apiece.

Instead of focusing on the whole, Dodson said, the team focused on the parts.

It worked.

Firestone and Martin both carded 78s, and Sobeck shot a 79 to help the team to its finish.

“I was pretty much wanting some payback,” Martin said. “That was terrible. On the second hole (Tuesday) I just hit a really nice iron next to the pin.”

The team now preps for a little home cooking. Steamboat next plays Sept. 7 at the Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig and Sept. 8 at Haymaker Golf Course.
