Steamboat Springs Freshman Andrew Firestone led the Steamboat Springs High School golf team Monday in the first of three tournaments this week.
“I’m real happy with Andrew’s round,” Sailors coach Steve Dodson said during the return trip from Rifle to Steamboat Springs on Monday afternoon. “He’s been working really hard to break that 80 barrier and he did that today. I’m very proud of him.”
The Sailors finished in fifth place for the tournament with a team score of 246. Aspen won the tournament at 219, followed by Montrose and Rifle at 232. Eagle Valley slipped into the No. 4 slot with a team total of 241.
Firestone led the Steamboat team with his round of 79. Sam Scheer shot an 83, Erik Sobeck shot an 84, and Sam Samlowski shot a 91.
“I played pretty well today,” Firestone said about the round. “I was putting the ball well and I hit most of the fairways.”
Firestone said the finish gives him confidence as he looks forward to playing the course again in a few months.
Dodson said Monday’s round at the Rifle course was a preview for the regional tournament, which will be held on the same course.
“This was a practice round for the regional tournament,” Dodson said. “This was an opportunity to find places where we can shave some strokes and ways to play better when it really counts.”
The coach said Steamboat will take a mix of junior varsity and varsity players to Meeker on Tuesday for another tournament before wrapping up the week Thursday in Eagle Valley.
