Arnie’s Army hits Steamboat golf course

John F. Russell

— More than 40 golfers at the Steamboat Golf Club joined Arnie’s Army on Wednesday afternoon to help in the battle against prostate cancer.

“This is the seventh year that we’ve held this tournament,” organizer Rich Danter said. Danter said he was inspired by the effort of his wife, Linda, in running the Rally for the Cure golf tournament. He understands that this tournament is quite a bit smaller but said the effort is fueled by the same desire to help those battling cancer.

“I can’t do what Linda does,” he said Thursday afternoon. “But I want to make the effort to do my part, and this has become a really fun event at the Steamboat Golf Club.”

This year, 45 golfers paid $20 each to play in the tournament, which was held Wednesday at Steamboat Golf Club. There was an afternoon session with golfers playing back-to-back, 9-hole rounds and a 9-hole evening session. The money raised from entry fees along with donations including $250 from the Steamboat Golf Club’s men’s association, $100 from Ski Town Women’s Golf Association and $100 from the Steamboat Ladies Golf Club helped this year’s tournament top $1,500, which will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Rich Danter said he also got generous donations from several individuals in the community and $180 from his mother-in-law, Marilyn Finkel, which helped boost the final tally.

In addition, Danter also has received support from several local businesses who donated prizes to the tournament.

Winners in this year’s tournament included Jeff Nelson, who shot a 29 to lead the field on the front 9, and Rich Danter, who matched that round to lead the field on the back 9. Gary Lokkesmoe won the closest to the pin honors on two holes in the afternoon session, and AJ Fleming won the closest to the pin in the evening session.
