Wednesday’s Storm Peak Challenge, the toughest race in the Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series, pushed riders like no other event does, driving them up slopes so steep that many in the usually iron-willed field were reduced to hopping off their bikes like mere mortals.

Crews reach 85-percent containment on Cedar Fire

Fire crews have achieved 85-percent containment on the Cedar Fire, a blaze near Cedar Mountain, five miles northwest of Craig, the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit reported late Wednesday. The fire began about 11 a.m. Tuesday on Bureau of Land Management public land at the base of Cedar Mountain on Moffat County Road 7. It’s been described as a “wildland urban interface fire.” “Fire crews made good progress with mop-up and fireline reinforcement today,” according to fire authorities. “However access to parts of the fire was hampered by steep, rough terrain. No support with retardant was necessary and there has been no fire growth.”

Woman taken to hospital after ATV rollover

A 44-year-old woman was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with injuries not considered to be life-threatening after she rolled her all-terrain vehicle Tuesday in North Routt County.

John Weibel, who raises grass-fed beef under the Rockin J Pastures brand has added dairy cows to his operation at Moonhill Dairy.
