The Hayden Public Library will host its annual Scholastic Book Fair through May 10 during regular library hours. There will be books available for all ages and prices. There also will be school supplies, toys, computer game software and other fun items to purchase. Call the library at 970-276-3777.

Ladies Golf Club events are set to start next week

The Steamboat Springs Ladies Golf Club schedule is set to begin Tuesday with a preseason warmup at the Steamboat Golf Course. A ladies fun day warmup with prizes is May 10, a low putts event is May 17, an executive par three event is May 24, and a fairways green day is May 31. Migratory bird day set to include birdhouse contest

Carpenter Ranch is celebrating International Migratory Bird Day on May 14, with events from 6:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the ranch east of Hayden off U.S. Highway 40. Events will include a recycled birdhouse contest with judging at 12:30 p.m. The contest rules are:

■ Birdhouses must be made strictly from recycled materials, and extra credit is given for materials obtained from Home ReSource at the Milner Landfill (must show receipt)

■ Houses must be designed for house wrens or mountain bluebirds. House wren: Entrance holes must be 1 inch in diameter and 1 to 6 inches above floor; interior size should be 4-inches-by-4-inches. Mountain bluebirds: Entrance hole must be 1 and 9/16 inches in diameter, 1 and 1/8 inches from the top and 8 inches from the floor. Interior should be 5-inches-by-5-inches.

■ A hinged side or roof must be provided so the house can be easily checked and cleaned; try to waterproof the house but also drill holes for drainage and ventilation.

■ No perches. Judging based on creativity and functionality.

Hayden library announces May reading group novels

Youths ages 10 to 15 are welcome to join Hayden Public Library’s new reading group, The Rapid Readers Meeters.

Reading group events include book activities, games, refreshments and book discussions. The group will discuss “Wake,” by Lisa McMann, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the library.

The library’s book discussion club for adults meets at 7:30 p.m. May 24. The books for May are “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” by Mohsin Hamid, and “Around the World in 80 Days,” by Jules Verne. Refreshments will be served. New members are welcome to join the group.

Oak Creek to host meeting about farmers market May 8

A meeting for food growers, artists, musicians and vendors about starting an Oak Creek farmers market is from 3 to 4 p.m. May 8 at Kiwi at the Creek Coffee Shop in Oak Creek. Colorado produce is preferred, but out-of-state products will be considered. Event organizers also are seeking handmade art and family-friendly performers.
