— It was the kind of wet, cold and miserable day that was made for just about anything but good scores in track and field events. Still, the Hayden and Soroco high school athletes continued to better their marks Saturday at a meet in Rifle.

With the state meet looming just a month away, the teams are beginning to narrow their focus.

“I feel pretty good, confident and strong,” Soroco sophomore AJ Anderson said. “I’d really like to make it to state in an individual event. That shows a lot more of yourself. It would just be fun.”

Anderson was one of a number of Rams and Tigers on Saturday to continue toward that goal. The state qualification process for Class 2A is different this year, mirroring the system used by the larger-class schools for the past couple of years. Previously, the top finishers from several regional meets earned tickets to state. Now, those to record the top 18 times, distances and heights throughout the season earn the bids.

With about four weeks to go, Soroco’s Anderson finds himself on the bubble. He set a personal best Saturday in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 4 inches before bowing out attempting 9-10. He also was good in the long jump, where he placed fifth. In both events, he said he’s ranked right about 18th in the state.

“I need to turn better off the pole over the standard when I jump in pole vault. I’ve been going over with my back,” Anderson said. “In long jump, I have the speed coming in that I need. I need to drive more and get more height.”

Other Rams and Tigers used Saturday’s opportunity to better their already strong chances for a trip to the state meet.

Hayden’s Chris Zirkle proved to be in a class of his own in the 3,200 run. One competitor hung with him for the first 300 meters, but Zirkle surged on the home stretch of the first lap and ran the rest of the race all by himself. He won easily, recording a time of 9:51.79.

Soroco’s Micaela Meyer had several top results in the hurdles, finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles. Teammate Josie Rossi was third in the 1,600 run, and Hayden’s Aubree Haskins was at her best in the shot put, finishing fourth with a toss of 30 feet, 1 inch.

Haskins also placed sixth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump.

“It wasn’t the best day. The weather threw me off a little,” Haskins said. “Still, I feel pretty good at this point. There are some things I need to work on still, but my shot put is going a lot better this year. That’s for sure.”

Soroco’s Nic Paxton led the way for three locals to score high in the triple jump, finishing third with a leap of 37 10-1/2, ahead of sixth-place David Strait and Hayden Blake in eighth.

Blake was even better in the 300 hurdles, finishing third.

Brandon Ray and Dakota Zehner also scored for the Tigers, placing fifth and sixth in the high jump.

“The kids did well for the conditions,” Hayden coach Richard Bush said. “We’re doing great. We just keep doing better.”

Soroco relay teams also placed high. The boys 800 and 400 relays teams were fifth. The girls 1,600 and 800 sprint medley relays were third, and the 800 relay team was fourth.

“I was pleased with everyone’s performances,” Rams coach David Bruner said. “We still need to work more on our handoffs, though.”

Hayden and Soroco return to action Friday at Moffat County.
