Steamboat Springs — Led by its distance runners, the Steamboat Springs High School track and field team picked up a team relay and individual win Saturday at a track meet in Eagle Valley.

Despite cold rain and wind all day, Steamboat still got impressive finishes from its distance runners.

Even without senior Jeff Sperry, who missed the meet because of illness, the 3,200-meter relay team of Jack Burger, Scott Powers, Colton Lewer and Asher Rohde finished first, in 8 minutes, 48.58 seconds.

Burger and Powers kept the team in it, Lewer ran down the competition and Rohde had a personal best leg to help the Sailors get the win.

Burger also won the 1,600 with a new personal best time of 4:50.04. He let two other runners lead through the first 1,000 meters and dominated the final 600 to win by a large margin.

Despite also running earlier in the day, Lewer and Burger finished second and third in the 800. Lewer ran a 2:13.23, and Burger finished in 2:13.63.

Josh Heald had a new personal best in the shot put, throwing 24-3 1/2, and Tanner Morrison, back from injury, ran a solid 200, finishing 14th in 26.12.

Freshman Stephanie Moos continues to improve in the sprints and placed eighth in the 100 in a time of 14.49. Pichya Nimit, running her first 800, placed ninth in 2:54.02.

Sperry is currently 10th in Class 4A boys in the 800 run. Burger is 12th in the 3,200 run, and the boys 3,200 relay team is in 18th.

The top 18 individuals and teams qualify for the state meet.
