Steamboat Springs On April 4, 2011, public health departments across Colorado will start celebrating National Public Health Week by providing safety tips to prevent injuries at home, in the workplace, at play and in the community. This year’s national theme, “Injury is No Accident: Live Injury-Free,” emphasizes that injuries are not accidents because they can be prevented.
Preventing injuries is something each of us can do every day. You’re preventing a potential injury each time you choose to drive the speed limit and wear your seat belt. Living injury-free is teaching children to look both ways before they cross the street or wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear during sports or recreational activities. It’s making sure you exercise for strength and balance and your home is clear of clutter to avoid slips and falls.
Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among adults 65 and older? An average of 407 Coloradans older than 65 die from a fall-related injury each year. Removing tripping hazards from stairs and living areas such as piles of books or slippery rugs are a start to a safer home.
