Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School boys basketball team’s season ended a week before players would have liked, but the Tigers still received plenty of accolades in the way of post-season awards.
Five Hayden players earned all-Western Slope League honors. The group was led in awards, as it was on the floor, by senior Graig Medvesk.
Medvesk was named to the Western Slope first team and also honored as the league’s player of the year, a unanimous choice.
Senior guard Ben Williams and sophomore forward Jorge Valdez joined Medvesk on the first team. Sophomore forward Mark Doolin and junior guard Hunter Johnson earned honorable mention league honors.
Hayden lost in the regional finals, one win shy of a second consecutive trip to the state tournament. The Tigers finished with a 19-4 record.
Medvesk led the way, putting up some of the gaudiest stats in the state. His 20 points per game ranked fourth in Class 2A. He was second in steals with 4.6 per game and fourth in 3-pointers, with 2.7 per game. Medvesk finished fifth in all classifications in steals.
Valdez, in his first year on the varsity team, finished third in 2A and sixth overall in rebounding, averaging 11.6 per game.
