Our View: Rockfall issues merit action

The most active period of rockslides in memory along a stretch of U.S. Highway 40 between Steamboat Springs and Hayden calls for swift, decisive action from the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT crews have been performing rock-scaling work in the area for the past several weeks, and officials with the state’s transportation department have vowed more work in the wake of the series of recent rockslides. That may not be enough.

A Routt County parent survey conducted by Grand Futures Prevention Coalition will help it create new programming to promote alternatives to youth substance abuse. The survey was completed by 235 parents whose children attend Steamboat, Hayden or South Routt schools.

I’d never skied Christmas Tree Bowl. So, on Tuesday with a friend, we skied Christmas Tree Bowl on Tuesday, and it was awesome.

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests

The Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District requests comments on the scoping letter for Rangeland Management in the Stewardship Analysis Area. The analysis area includes 12,802 acres in one sheep and cattle allotment in Routt County, Colorado. The analysis area is located north of Hayden and includes the following townships and ranges: T10N; R87W. The purpose of this document is to determine whether or not to continue to authorize livestock grazing on the Stewardship allotment, and if so, under what conditions. The document includes three alternatives: a no action (no grazing) alternative, continue current management alternative, and the proposed action, which would modify livestock grazing management by using adaptive management to reach resource goals and objectives.

The inevitable happened the past two days with the Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team. Steamboat again defeated Mountain Conference opponents, beating Grand Junction, 11-4, on Friday and Fruita-Monument, 11-3, on Saturday.

Sailors beat Delta, 6-0, improving to 5-0-1

Steamboat Springs High School freshman Tatum Sear just has that sense that she belongs. Sear scored three goals in Saturday's 6-0 win against Delta at Steamboat. The Sailors now are 5-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the Western Slope League.

Routt Powder Riders takes group on annual snowmobile ride

Clients and their counselors from Horizons Specialized Services were taken on a 20-mile snowmobile ride Saturday morning courtesy of Routt Powder Riders, with sleds and guides provided by Steamboat Snowmobile Tours. It was the 14th year the snowmobiling club has organized the ride for Horizons clients and counselors.

Sales tax collections dip in Steamboat for February

1-time, $90K payment in February 2010 again skews city figures

A one-time, $90,000 sales-tax payment credited to the February 2010 books has resulted in a misleading picture of Steamboat Springs business in February 2011. According to a preliminary February sales tax report issued by the city Thursday, sales tax collections dropped nearly 1.5 percent in February compared with February 2010.

Fossil Ridge proves to be too much for Steamboat girls tennis team

The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team hit its first bump in the road Friday afternoon, dropping five of seven matches to Fossil Ridge after what has been a torrid start to the season. Steamboat returns to the court at 10:30 a.m. at home today against Poudre Valley.

Steamboat briefs: C.R. 129 closed because of thaw, impassable conditions

The county reports that Routt County Road 129 is closed to commercial and through traffic, effective immediately, from Columbine to the Three Forks Ranch, about 10.2 miles. The closure is because of spring thaw and impassable road conditions.

End-of-season celebrations are under way at Steamboat Ski Area today with the Los Lonely Boys performing at 3 p.m. in Gondola Square. The concert will usher in the last eight days of skiing at the ski area, which has reported receiving 415 inches of snow since October.

Urbane kicked off the third Skate Deck Art Show with a First Friday Artwalk reception Friday night and works will be on display through April. The Skate Deck Art Show features about 25 entries this year, coming from a variety of local artists.
