— Army 2nd Lt. John E. Yager, a 2006 graduate of Hayden High School, recently graduated from the Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox, Ky. Yager is the son of Monica A. Yager, of Hayden.

The course trains Army and Marine Corps lieutenants in leadership skills, tactics, gunnery, maintenance and operational aspects of weapons and vehicles used in an armor platoon, according to a news release. The course incorporates a training methodology called the “Gauntlet” — a field training exercise, experience-based learning method that combines basic armor officer students with noncommissioned officers from the U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officers Academy and captains attending the Armor Captains’ Career Course. After 16 weeks of instruction, the second lieutenants are assigned to tank and cavalry platoons prepared to lead mounted maneuver forces in combat operations.
