Case of whooping cough appears in Routt County
Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association has received a report on a case of pertussis in Routt County. The adult is expected to fully recover. Pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection.
Although it initially resembles an ordinary cold, with symptoms such as runny nose or congestion, sneezing and a mild cough or fever, whooping cough may eventually turn more serious, particularly in infants.
Whooping cough is most contagious before the coughing starts, according to the VNA. The best way to prevent it is through vaccinations. The childhood vaccine, called DTaP, is for children ages 6 and younger. The whooping cough booster vaccine for adolescents and adults ages 10 to 64 years is called Tdap. Both protect against whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria.
The VNA offers the vaccine for $14. To make an appointment, call 970-879-1632 in Routt County or 970-824-8233 in Moffat County.
