— If Saturday’s 12 Hours of Snowmass mountain bike race is any indication of the kind of effort that will be expected and pain endured at October’s 24 Hours of Moab, Nate Bird could be in for an agonizing weekend next month.

If his results from that Snowmass race are any indication, however, he could be in for a great one.

Bird teamed with fellow Honey Stinger/Trek rider Scott McCalmon to win the men’s duo division of the 12 Hours of Snowmass, leading the way as all three of the team’s entries earned podium spots.

“It was awesome,” Bird said. “The course was great.”

It proved great for his team, anyway. The first half was a demanding climb that took a heavy toll on riders whether they were making their first lap or their fifth.

The second half was a challenging, thrilling downhill. Bird and McCalmon rode steady, clinging to a small lead before blowing it open late in the day. They finished 13 laps, more than any team in any other class, and two better than any other men’s duo squad.

“We just went out hard every time,” Bird said. “We stayed fast, had very similar lap times and did really well as a team.”

Bird recorded the fastest lap time of any man in the race. Honey Stinger/Trek teammate Sari Anderson took the same honor for the women as she helped lead a trio of riders to victory in the three-person category.

Steamboat Springs rider Kris Cannon, meanwhile, finished second in the solo women’s division.

“It was a great day,” Bird said. “It was definitely a good warm up for Moab.”
