Soroco volleyball picks up 2 wins

— The Soroco High School volleyball team picked up a pair of wins during the weekend, downing district opponents West Grand and Paonia in four games each.

Soroco beat West Grand on Friday, 25-23, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-21, before downing Paonia, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-21, on Saturday.

The common theme in each game was the growing maturity of the Soroco team. In each, Soroco was tough defensively as a team.

“They were close games for sure,” Rams coach Kim Reeves said. “They are just so much more confident, and they know they can win.”

Shelby and Lindsay Miles led the way against West Grand, each picking up 20 digs.

Against Paonia, Reeves said Soroco was even more impressive. The Rams continued to play solid defense but cut their hitting and serving errors down.

The win improves Soroco to 4-1 overall. The team has won four consecutive matches after dropping its first of the season.

“The biggest thing is we’re able to come from behind and win it,” Reeves said. “Even if we get down by 5 or 6 points, they know they can still win. That’s something this team has learned. The maturity is showing. They now have the confidence to come back and win.”

Soroco next plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against West Grand.
