The Creekside hiking and biking trail at Steamboat Ski Area generated bitterness early in the summer as users and officials clashed concerning the trail’s use. Now, organizers of a downhill mountain bike race hope the same trail can signify the community’s togetherness.

State suicide rate highest in 2 decades
Highest number ever. That’s the sobering reality Jarrod Hindman is faced with. Hindman, program manager for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Office of Suicide Prevention, announced Tuesday that in 2009, Colorado saw its highest number of suicide deaths in history.
Statistics indicate visitations increasing at Elkhead State Park
Aside from two boat inspectors on duty, Elkhead State Park was nearly empty Thursday afternoon. The inspectors had good ideas as to why. “It’s too windy for boats today,” inspector Maureen Underhill said of the strong autumn winds that pushed through the Yampa Valley. “September (attendance) always drops off because of school and hunting,” inspector Stacy Kapferer added.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is offering a hunter safety class at Hayden High School. The class is from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 to 24, and the time is to be announced for a Sept. 25 class.

Man found in North Routt creek shares his story of survival
For five nights, Craig Horlacher was propped with his torso on a rock and his legs in the shallow water on the banks of a North Routt County creek. His lower leg broken, Horlacher decided his best odds for survival rested on a plan to stay near enough to the creek to drink water and catch fish. Horlacher, 57, broke his leg when he lost his footing on the rough bed of the stream as he was unhooking a fish Aug. 7.
