Steamboat Springs There were mistakes Tuesday when the Hayden High School girls volleyball team took on Rifle.
“I even had some,” third-year coach Greg Johnson said. “But besides those, we played well. Our girls showed as much hustle as I’ve seen from a team I’ve coached, and that’s an encouraging thing.”
That hustle paid off in a three-game sweep as the Tigers thumped Rifle, 25-21, 25-15, 25-22. Johnson said an all-around effort from his entire varsity roster made the difference in the team’s first appearance after losing some of its primary firepower from a year ago.
“Everyone pretty much played equal time, all the girls,” Johnson said. “We had two freshmen getting their first high school experience and a couple of girls playing their first varsity game, but they all played well.”
The squad will look to turn that win into some real momentum at 8 p.m. today as it welcomes Little Snake River High School from Baggs, Wyo., to Hayden.
