Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School football team opened the 2010 season with a 30-8 win against Holyoke on Saturday in Idaho Springs.
Hayden (1-0) rode its defense and the ability of quarterback Graig Medvesk to a win.
“On the bus heading down, I felt almost a calmness,” Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. “It was time to play ball. To get this first one behind us with a victory feels good.”
The two teams battled back and forth in the first quarter, with Hayden taking an 8-0 lead on a Medvesk scamper and 2-point conversion.
In the third quarter, Hayden busted it open with two more Medvesk touchdowns. Holyoke cut the lead to 22-8 in the third quarter when the team returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Medvesk then hit Scott Armbruster with a 30-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to give Hayden a 30-8 lead.
Treyben Letlow led the Tigers defensively with 22 tackles, an interception and two fumble recoveries.
“Defensively, I’m very pleased with our production,” Baumgartner said.
Hayden now preps for the biggest test of the early season. The Tigers play Yuma at 1 p.m. Saturday in Idaho Springs.
Yuma won the state title last season and enters Saturday’s game as the top team in Class 1A.
“It’s the chance of a lifetime,” Baumgartner said.
“They’re the No. 1 team in the state. You don’t get that chance very often.”
